Do Man Buns Cause Baldness?

Man buns have been growing in popularity, thanks to celebrities like Jared Leto, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Chris Hemsworth, to name just a few.

But are they causing men to go bald? They answer, they can.

I talk a lot on the blog about women who put themselves at risk of traction alopecia, a condition that can lead to irreversible damage to the hair, as well as hair loss, but the risks extend to men as well. Men who constantly wear their hair in tight styles, like the man bun, are at risk of damaging their hair, and of permanent damage, such as hair loss. I recommend changing up your style regularly, to avoid constant tension and pulling of the hair, but the best thing for your hair is to avoid these styles, or limiting their frequency at the very least.

Huffington Post - 9 Stars Who Actually Look Better With Gray Hair

Huffington Post recently did a fun slideshow, highlighting 9 stars who actually look better with gray hair. George Clooney of course made the cut, he is joined by John Stewart, Hugh Grant, Helen Mirren, and others, who have went against Hollywood standards and opted to age naturally, and it has clearly worked for them.

You can see the full slideshow, here

Another thing to notice, specifically with the men on the list, is how many of them seem to be beating the odds against hair loss. By the age of 50, men have a 50% chance of losing their hair, so to see such full hairlines is quite an impressive accomplishment!

Hugh Jackman Says, "Being Bald is the Best!"

Hugh Jackman, 46, thinks everyone should shave their head, at least once. The actor came to this conclusion after his recent bald stint as part of his character transformation for the upcoming Peter Pan movie, in which he stars as Blackbeard.

Jackman opted to really shave his head after learning a bald cap would require 45 extra minutes in the makeup chair, and he's apparently very happy with the decision. "I recommend everyone to shave their head at least once in their life," the actor told Access Hollywood."For me, I'm a typical guy – lazy. So hair is just a hassle."

While it sounds like Jackman enjoyed going bald, as you can see from the above photo, taken this week, his hair has since grown back. And despite some temporal point recession, his hairline is looking pretty good for his age. Though he could benefit from some preventative treatments to slow down or stop the recession from deepening.

Is Matt Damon Treating His Hair Loss?

Matt Damon's new movie, "The Martian," is currently out in theaters - but in the actor's recent publicity stills, one thing that stands out is the increased density of his hair line.

Photos taken of Damon back in 2012 showed obvious signs of thinning in the frontal hair line:

At that time, Damon was 42 years old, and hair loss tends to speed up during a man's 40s, not slow down. Three years later, this hair loss, which is highly noticeable in the above photo, should be considerably worse - but recent photos show this is anything but the case. Instead, this thinning appears to have been stalled and slightly reversed:

So how did Damon's hair line thicken? It may be due to hair restoration treatment, such as a finasteride or minoxidil based therapy, or platetlet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. Treatments like Formula 82M, FinPlus, PRP and nutritionals such as Viviscal Pro and Amino-Mar or effective ways to reduce/reverse thinning and boost the vitality of the hair follicles.

Chris Hemsworth's Widow Peak

Former Sexiest Man Alive Chris Hemsworth, 32, has risen to fame thanks to his popular super hero roles, but is he winning the battle against his receding hairline?

As you can see from his photos, the star has a V-shaped point in the hairline, or what is commonly referred to as a widow's peak. But while the star is seeing some early signs of a maturing hairline, he is fortunate to have an otherwise full head of hair.

But he might want to consider a proactive hair regimen of FDA-approved Propecia or Rogaine, which could help him avoid any further recession.
He would hardly be the first actor to take action against hair loss, more celebrities are investing in hair restoration than ever before. New technology and non-invasive procedures are selling points for many actors looking to enhance their looks discreetly.

Hollywood scruff is often credited for the rise in beard transplants, but is there more to this trend than just looking good? There is an interesting article in The Hollywood Reporter that looks at the psychology behind the Hollywood beard, using David Letterman, John Hamm, Ben Affleck and a host of other Hollywood stars as subjects.

You can read the article, David Letterman and the Psychology of the Hollywood Beard, here: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/david-letterman-psychology-hollywood-beard-829786

Whether you want a beard for fashion, or part of a more serious statement - facial hair transplants can be used to restore or enhance areas of facial hair which are lacking. To learn more, click here

Postpartum Hair Loss Watch - Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan recently gave birth to her first child - but now that she's in the postpartum phase, she could start to see some associated hair loss.

Postpartum hair loss is relatively common - but don't worry, it isn't permanent. The medical community believes it could be triggered by the hormonal fluctuations that occur during this period. While pregnant, women see a surge in their estrogen and progesterone levels (which is why women have such great hair when pregnant) - and after the baby is born, these levels return to the pre-pregnancy level. It is this sudden drop-off in hormone levels that causes the hair follicles to go into short-term shock.

As a result, shedding is quite common in the weeks, and months, following the delivery.

The actress may not experience postpartum hair loss - but if she does, I hope her doctors will tell her not to worry. Postpartum hair loss is normal, temporary, and shouldn't be a problem.

How Does Hugh Grant Do It?

Even without his signature floppy hair, it is hard to ignore how well Hugh Grant's hairline is holding up at age 55.

By the age of 50, most men will experience noticeable hair loss. This raises the question, is it his genes or preventive treatments? I wouldn't put it past the actor to have started preventive treatments early on - the most likely candidates are Propecia and Rogaine. Although low level laser therapy and Viviscal are also possible.

And it isn't just Grant's hairline that is worthy of attention. He was recently named among the top celebrities who look better with gray hair!

Whatever he's doing, it's definitely working. If he sticks to a multi-therapy approach, he could still have this strong, full hairline 10 years from now.

Carlos Boozer Admits to Painting his Hair

Some men try the combover, some go for a hairpiece, but NBA star Carlos Boozer took another direction to hide his hair loss - paint!

Well, not paint exactly. In a recent interview, Boozer finally came clean on the extreme measures he's tried to get his hair back. “…they came out with this — it’s like a hair dye, whatever, for men called the ‘bigen.’ So I tried it, and he just made my stuff look like shoe polish up there … this is like five years later, and I’m still hearing about it.”

While Boozer seems to be able to joke about the incident now, for most men, hair loss isn't a laughing matter. Luckily, there are lots of effective treatments available, such as finasteride or minoxidil based therapy, platetlet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, Formula 82M, low-level laser therapy, and advanced hair transplant procedures. Hair loss is a treatable condition, but early detection and intervention are keys to achieving optimal results.

Howard Stern: Does He Wear a Wig? - RadarOnline

When it comes to celebrity hair, there are few people more controversial than Howard Stern. While America's favorite shock jock has long asserted his hair is real, people are still skeptical.

RadarOnline decided to take an in-depth look at Howard's hair, to try and answer the burning question of whether or not he wears a wig. When they asked for my input on the matter, I was able to offer an interesting perspective as I had the opportunity to interview on Howard's show last year to discuss beard transplants, celebrity scruff, and other topics, including briefly, Howard's famous locks.

You can listen to the full interview, here. You'll hear how the interview, and Howard, changes tone after I bring up his hair.

While an argument can certainly be made that his hair doesn't necessarily match up with his age, having never treated him, I can't say for sure if it is his hair or not. But if it is his hair, my guess would be that he has been using some type of preventative treatment, like FDA-approved Propecia, for years. An occasional dose of low-level therapy might also do wonders for keeping his curly tresses healthy.

You can read the full RadarOnline story, here

For now, it looks like the wig debate continues, but in my experience, hair doesn't look that good without some type of medical assistance.

Is your mother's father responsible for your baldness? Does hair loss skip generations? Are you going to lose your hair?

Huffington Post recently asked me to help comb through some of these questions, you can read the full article, here

Those of you ready to blame your mom's genes for your hair loss may want to think again. There are over 200 genes that we’re aware of now that regulate hair and hair growth. Color quality, texture, length of growth cycles, balding patterns, the speed of balding -- all of those put together will determine how quickly you see loss occur, how quickly it progresses, and how long it will occur later in life."

But the good news is, whatever the reason behind your hair loss, today there are numerous effective treatments available.

Is Stress Causing Kris Jenner to Lose Her Hair?

Kris Jenner was recently photographed with noticeably thinning hair - could it be the stress of her very public divorce and family issues are finally taking their toll on her?

While it may come as a shock, recent studies suggest that divorce can be a trigger for hair loss in women. The research found that, genetics aside, marital status is the next strongest predictor of hair loss in women. The good news is, if  she is experiencing stress-related hair loss, the thinning will most likely not be permanent. However if there are other lifestyle factors behind her hair loss, such as over-styling, chemicals, or even plastic surgery, she will need to adjust her behaviors if she wants to save her hair from permanent damage.

She can give her hair a boost with nutritional supplements, and maintaining a diet filled with healthy hair foods. Laser therapy can also be an effective way to stimulate growth.

Prince Harry's Thinning Crown

It appears that there is another member of the royal family with a thinning crown. New photos of Prince Harry, 31, show the young prince with a growing bald spot. Despite his age, his hair loss shouldn't come as a surprise, considering the fact that both his brother, Prince William, and father, Prince Charles, suffer from similar hair loss, means he is at a higher risk, since male pattern hair loss is the result of a genetic predisposition to androgen sensitivity.

In recent photos, Prince Harry is clearly showing significant thinning in the crown. Hopefully, he'll get started on an aggressive multi-therapy approach (Formula 82M, finasteride, low level laser therapy, etc.) to protect his hair line and prevent further recession.

Hair Loss Watch for Kim Kardashian?

Kim Kardashian recently gave birth to her second child - but now that she has entered postpartum phase, she could start to see some associated hair loss.

Postpartum hair loss is relatively common - but don't worry, it isn't permanent. The medical community believes it could be triggered by the hormonal fluctuations that occur during this period. It is this sudden drop-off in hormone levels that causes the hair follicles to go into short-term shock.

As a result, shedding is quite common in the weeks, and months, following the delivery.

After the birth of her first child, Kim revealved she was using "Hairfinity," a hair supplement, to keep her locks looking good for the cameras. The right supplement can help with stimulating healthy hair growth and boosting the overall health of your hair. The truth is, many women take calcium supplements to improve their health - but the same should also be true for hair supplements. Nutritional supplements like the marine-derived protein based Viviscal Professional, one of my personal favorites for patients, and doctor-designed Hair Vitamin Complex can all boost the vitality of your hair.

But remember, these supplements can't do everything on their own! They should be combined with a healthy hair diet, as well as a beauty regimen that doesn't create excess stress on your hair.

We'll have to wait and see if the reality star experiences any postpartum hair loss - but if she does, I hope her doctors will tell her not to worry. Postpartum hair loss is normal, temporary, and shouldn't be a problem.

Recession Alert - Harry Styles

Boy bander Harry Styles was recently photographed with early signs of a receding hairline.

While the singer, 21, may seem too young for hair loss, it is actually not all that uncommon in a man's twenties, and over 20 percent may experience it. Thankfully, for Harry, his hair loss doesn't appear too problematic yet, but he should definitely start taking it seriously. By being proactive now, he can stop male pattern hair loss in its tracks and maintain a thick, natural-looking hairline well into old age.

When it comes to hair loss, preventative care is key. Science has proven if you wait until the hair loss is visible to the naked eye, you're too late - you've already lost 50 percent.

Brian Urlacher Debuts New Head of Hair

Ex-Bears linebacker, Brian Urlacher, 37, is making headlines after debuting a new head of hair. Urlacher was known during his playing days for his shaved head, which he sported during his entire career on the field.

This week, he stopped by "WGN Morning News" to discuss his hair restoration procedure. Explaining that he kept the procedure mostly a secret, except from friends and family, and that he hid it from the world by wearing a hat for the last 8 months while his new hair grew in. Urlacher explained that while he was happy being bald, he was curious what he'd look like with hair, something he hadn't experienced since college, and after a friend had a successful procedure, he became curious.

Of the procedure itself, he said, "I was surprised how fast it went and how pain-free it was. And, the procedure took me out of action for zero days."

You can watch a clip of the big reveal, here.

Urlacher is hardly the first celebrity, or athlete to take advantage of today's cutting-edge hair transplant procedures, including NeoGraft FUE, a no stitch, no scalpel microsurgical hair transplant procedure that removes individual hair follicles for implantation into the balding areas of the scalp, and the ARTAS robotic-assisted FUE, an image-guided robot which uses advanced digital imagery to map and analyze the hair in natural groupings on the scalp. The ARTAS System is expected to be approved by the Italian Ministry of Health soon.

Good for Brian for tackling his hair loss, I hope his experience will encourage other men facing baldness to take action!

Recession Alert - Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio may be a favorite to take home an Oscar this year, but the star continues to see deepening recession in the temporal region.

DiCaprio, 41, has had signs of recession for years, but he is fortunate because his hair loss is isolated to this area. As you can see in photos, while hairline is maturing, typical of an adult hairline, he has yet to see any frontal balding. He is also fortunate to have an otherwise full head of hair.

Hair loss is not uncommon for men in their 40s - in fact, the percent risk of hair loss is proportional to your age: i.e., 20% in 20s, 30% in 30s, 40% in 40s and so forth. It's important to get tested early on to see if you're at risk for male pattern hair loss. Genetic tests like HairDX are available at your local hair restoration specialist.

Science has proven if you wait until the hair loss is visible to the naked eye, you're too late - you've already lost 50 percent. In DiCaprio's case, it would be wise to consult a hair restoration specialist now and consider starting on preventative treatments to ensure he slows down any further recession and keeps the hair that he has strong and healthy.
