Divorce Stress Causing Khloe Kardashian to Lose Her Hair?

$

As if Khloe Kardashian's public divorce drama wasn't already hard enough, new photos suggest the reality star may be seeing signs of hair loss, which some are attributing to divorce stress.

While it may seem strange that divorce can lead to hair loss, studies have found that it can in fact trigger hair loss in women. One study in particular found that, genetics aside, marital status is the next strongest predictor of hair loss in women. Stress alone doesn't cause permanent hair loss, but it commonly contributes to temporary hair loss, called telogen effluvium, in both men and women. The good news is, this type of hair loss can usually be reversed by reducing your stress.

Khloe's locks may very well be feeling the effects of her divorce, but I have a feeling her frequent use of extensions is also a factor in her hair troubles. As I've mentioned countless times, hair extensions are actually extremely harmful to the hair follicles. Because of the excess weight and pulling, hair extensions, when worn too much, can lead to a type of hair loss called "traction alopecia."

Whatever is behind her hair loss, if she wants to speed up the hair recovery process, she may also want to consider a regimen of low level laser therapy and a vitamin supplement like Viviscal to help stimulate healthy hair growth.

Is Kim Kardashian Going Bald?

Recent photos of Kim Kardashian have the Internet buzzing that the reality star may be losing her hair. The shots, taken of her in workout clothes, sans makeup, show signs of thinning. Has her love of extensions caught up with her, or is she experiencing postpartum hair loss?

The answer, probably both.
Postpartum hair loss is relatively common - but she doesn't need to worry, it isn't permanent. The medical community believes the hair loss could be triggered by the hormonal fluctuations that occur during this period. While pregnant, women see a surge in their estrogen and progesterone levels (which is why women have such great hair when pregnant) - and after the baby is born, these levels return to the pre-pregnancy level. It is this sudden drop-off in hormone levels that causes the hair follicles to go into short-term shock.

As a result, shedding is quite common in the months following the delivery. But the bottom line is, postpartum hair loss is normal, temporary, and shouldn't be a problem or a cause for major concern.

However, if Kim is trying to hide her thinning through the continued use of hair extensions, she could be risking more severe, and possibly permanent damage. My advice to Kim would be to lay off the extensions, especially during this period when her hair is in a weakened state. But if is she really wants to speed up the hair recovery process, she may want to consider a regimen of low level laser therapy and a vitamin supplement like Viviscal Pro to help stimulate healthy hair growth.

Will the Pixie Cut Trend Continue in 2014?

If we look back at celebrity hairstyles in 2013, there is no doubt that the biggest trend was the pixie cut. Everyone from Beyonce to Jennifer Lawrence to Pamela Anderson ditched their signature long locks in favor of sleek and sophisticated pixies.

While not everyone was a fan of this trend, I for one commend these stars for ditching the extensions and over-styling that goes into maintaing long locks.

I've discussed many times the risks that come with the use of extensions and weaves, but no matter how many celebrities fall victim, women still seem to love the ever-changing looks they provide. Hopefully, more women will take a cue from these stars and give their hair a break this year. A good hair cut is a great way to get your hair healthy again, as long as you change the habits that were damaging your hair in the first place!

The pixie wasn't the only big celebrity hair trend in 2013, for a recap of other hairstyles that had people talking, check out Styleite's current feature, here

Recession Alert - Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio was a big winner last night at the Golden Globes, but it seems the actor isn't winning the battle against his receding hairline!

DiCaprio, 39, has had signs of recession for years, specifically in the temporal region. But DiCaprio is lucky, while his hairline is maturing, typical of an adult hairline, he has yet to see any frontal balding. He is also fortunate to have an otherwise full head of hair.

Hair loss is not uncommon for men in their 30s - in fact, the percent risk of hair loss is proportional to your age: i.e., 20% in 20s, 30% in 30s, 40% in 40s and so forth. It's important to get tested early on to see if you're at risk for male pattern hair loss. Genetic tests like HairDX are available at your local hair
restoration specialist.

Science has proven if you wait until the hair loss is visible to the naked eye, you're too late - you've already lost 50 percent. In DiCaprio's case, it would be wise to consult a hair restoration specialist now and consider starting on preventative treatments to ensure he slows down any further recession and keeps the hair that he has strong and healthy.

Huffington Post: Banish Baldness in 2014

If you were judging by news headlines, you'd think we cured baldness in 2013. This past October, after scientists announced they successfully grew human hair in the laboratory, many media outlets misleadingly reported it as a "miracle cure" and quite possibly the end of baldness. But the reality is far different -- hair "cloning", gene therapy and other wonder treatments are still not ready for primetime -- and potentially a long way away from becoming available at your local doctor's office.
But though we've yet to discover a "cure" for baldness, that doesn't mean there aren't breakthrough treatments out there -- and 2014 could be a banner year for several important new hair loss treatments.
To learn more about four key treatments that could become more widely available to you this year, check out my Huffington Post column, here

Will Oscars Cost Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto Their Hair?

Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto received Oscar nominations for their roles in The Dallas Buyers Club this week. Both stars went through a physical transformation during filming, McConaughey lost nearly 50 lbs. and Leto reportedly dropped 30 lbs. for their respective roles.

Their dedication to their characters may earn them both Oscars next month, but the extreme diets that helped them lose the weight can have damaging, and sometimes long-lasting effects on our health, including the health of our hair. What many men and women don’t realize is, these “crash” diets can cause major shedding due to the steep drop in nutrients in the body. Which is why each year starting in February, we tend to see an influx of new patients concerned about sudden hair loss resulting from New Year-inspired crash diets.

About Crash Diets & Hair Loss:

  • ‘Crash dieting’ isn’t just bad for the body, it can also lead to temporary hair loss.
  • Four to six weeks after the start of a crash diet, major shedding occurs throughout the crown of the head.
  • Steep drop in nutrients to the body forces some hair follicles to shed their hair strands and go into a prolonged resting phase during which time no new hairs are grown.
  • When your body thinks it’s starving, it doesn't make 'luxury' items like hair.
  • Condition is usually temporary, but it can still take six to 10 months for the hair to return back to normal.
  • Caloric, iron and protein deficiencies are among the most common nutritional triggers for unhealthy hair.
  • Vitamins, especially B, are important to the overall health of your hair and preventing hair loss and thinning.

Nickelodeon's Ariana Grande's Hair Confession

Nickelodeon star Ariana Grande recently took to her Facebook page to fight back against attacks on her hair, stating constant bleaching and colorings "destroyed her hair." It is so bad that the young star now wears extensions to hide the damage.

Many women don't understand that chemicals like bleaches and dyes fundamentally change the structure of your hair, making it weaker and more susceptible to breakage and damage. Overusing these treatments can lead to severe breakage, hair fallout, loss of density and volume and, if bad enough, even traction alopecia. While this sort of damage can ususlly be reversed if these habits are corrected, it can still be a long process for healthy hair to grow back.

Ariana should also use extensions with caution, as they too can cause damage to hair, especially if it is already in a weakened state.

If the young star wants to speed up the recovery process, vitamin supplememts like celebrity favorite Viviscal and professional strength Biotin, along with low level laser therapy are known ways to stimulate healthy hair growth. A healthy diet filled with "healthy hair foods" is also an easy way to boost the health, and appearance, of your hair.

Will Rob Lowe's Hair Ever Age?

An almost 50-year old Rob Lowe continues to keep his remarkably full hairline. Which leaves many asking, how does he do it? As most people know, the hair loss risk increases with age. But, specifically, at his age, Mr. Lowe is defying a nearly 50-percent chance of hair loss! Again, how does he do it?

It's my guess that Lowe has taken a very proactive approach in protecting his hairline over the last 10 to 20 years, and probably uses some type of preventative treatment - like FDA approved Propecia. I also wouldn't be surprised if he's used Rogaine from time to time (although treatment should be consistent to be effective) and low level laser therapy.

Just a hunch, but hair as good as his usually requires medical intervention. But will it last forever? Not without medical treatments like the ones I described above. Hair loss today is a treatable condition but proactive treatment and early detections are key to achieving optimal results!

Jennifer Aniston Goes Back to Extensions

This past November, Jennifer Aniston cut her signature locks into a short bob and publicly discussed the fragile state of her hair. Aniston was quoted in Elle magazine saying her hair "reacted badly to a Brazilian Blowout treatment," prompting the star to chop her hair.

But it appears Aniston is already missing her long locks, because she was spotted out recently with long extensions, which may again put her damaged hair at risk. I've talked about the risks associated with extensions countless times on here, and I'll say it again, hair extensions can be extremely harmful to the hair follicles. Because of the excess weight and pulling, hair extensions, when worn too much, can lead to a type of hair loss called "traction alopecia." Traction alopecia is a form of "scarring alopecia"and characterized by an obliteration of the hair follicles.

Hollywood often leads the world when it comes to style, but this is one trend that I'd be happy to see fade away.

I was recently asked by Huffington Post to answer the age-old question, 'When Do Men Go Bald?' This question of course doesn't have a simple answer, but if you're interested in learning more, check out the slideshow here, where we discuss everything from symptoms and statistics to triggers and treatments.

If you’re worried about hair loss, it is important to consult with a both your primary doctor and an experienced hair restoration physician—a doctor who specializes exclusively in the medical diagnosis, treatments and tracking of hair loss and regrowth. Only a qualified and experienced hair restoration physician can prescribe the most effective multi-therapy treatment options, including the latest available medical treatments and minimally-invasive transplants.

Julianne Hough Joins Team Pixie

Lately I've been discussing the pixie trend that is sweeping Hollywood, and it looks like Julianne Hough is the newest member of Team Pixie. The 'Dancing with the Stars' alum is making headlines after ditching her extensions in favor of a sleek new cut. Hough, 25, joins a growing number of celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence, Pamela Anderson, and even Beyonce - though she has since gone back to extensions.

While Hough didn't give a reason behind her new look, it is quite possible her frequent use of extensions was taking a toll on her hair. I've discussed many times the risks that come with the use of extensions and weaves, but no matter how many celebrities fall victim, women still seem to love the ever-changing looks they provide. Hopefully, more women will take a cue from these stars and give their hair a break. A good hair cut is a great way to get your hair healthy again, as long as you change the habits that were damaging your hair in the first place!

LOVE is in the hAIR!

When is the last time you showed your hair some love?

Whether you are fighting dry hair during the winter months, or frizz during the summer, it is always good to reevaluate your beauty regimen to make sure you are giving your hair everything it needs to be thick, healthy and beautiful all year ‘round.

In honor of Valentine's Day, here are four easy ways to show your hair a little extra TLC.
  • Feed Your Hungry Hair– It may seem unrelated, but what you eat, or don’t eat, has a huge impact on the health of our hair. A diet rich in whole foods, especially protein, is essential to achieving and maintaining healthy hair, while on the flipside, caloric, iron and protein deficiencies are among the most common nutritional triggers for unhealthy hair and hair loss. So if you want to show your hair you care, put down the box of chocolates and replace it with one of the many, healthy hair foods, like salmon, which is loaded with omega-3 fatty acid, dark green vegetables for vitamins A and C, and nuts, which are a terrific source of zinc, which can prevent hair shedding.
  • Avoid Over-Styling – Salon perms, Brazilian blowouts, frequent color treatments and even that super hot blow dryer or that flat iron used over and over again at home can degrade the proteins that make up your hair and its protective cuticle. Turn down the heat or say ‘no’ to the compulsive flat ironing in order to protect your hair from thermal damage. Products like Pantene Thermal Protection and Shine Spray can be helpful in decreasing friction and improving shine. Harsh chemicals are another risk to your hair.
  • Treat Your Scalp – Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp! But unfortunately, too many women forget to give their scalp the attention it needs. Daily shampooing and conditioning may help keep your hair healthy, but sometimes the scalp needs a little specialized attention. Whether your scalp is dry, itchy, flaky, or oily, it is easier than you may think to get a beautiful healthy scalp. Love your scalp like you love the skin of your face, and take care of it the same way.
  • Give Your Hair a Boost – Sleep habits, smoking, medications, and alcohol consumption can all affect the health of your hair. With so many factors at play with the health of our hair, including our genetic risks and inherited hair qualities, it is good to remember to give your hair a little extra TLC from time to time. For many looking to give their at-risk hair a little boost, “LOVE” is spelled “L-A-S-E-R.” Originally getting the nod from the FDA as a side effect-free way to treat hair loss, low level laser "brushes,""hoods" and "caps" are now being used by more women to simply improve hair quality by helping hair follicles create thicker, fuller, shinier and healthier hair.
Just remember, your hair can be your crowning glory, or an endless nightmare—it is up to you! Isn’t it time you showed your hair some love

Bradley Cooper Reportedly Taking Propecia

According to reports, Oscar-nominee Bradley Cooper is allegedly taking Propecia to combat the early signs of hair loss. Cooper, 39, has become a popular leading man in Hollywood over the past few years, so it wouldn't surprise me that he would take preventative measures to maintain his leading man looks. As he approaches 40, he faces a 40 percent chance of hair loss.

While more celebrities and athletes are opening up about their experience with hair transplants, it is still less common for them to discuss their Propecia use, but this doesn't mean it isn't widely used in Hollywood! I would guess that more than a few of Hollywood's leading men are taking advantage of Propecia, as well as the other preventative measures to protect their hairlines.

If the rumors are true, good for Cooper for taking preventative action against hair loss. If not, it may not be a bad idea to talk to a hair restoration physician about his options.

NBA Hair Awards - GQ.com

Who has the best hair in the NBA? Who has the worst? Do ponytails belong on the court? To find out, check out GQ.com's NBA Hair Awards, see the slideshow here

I write a lot about celebrities, but a growing number of high profile athletes are taking advantage of the new technologies available to treat hair loss. In the past few years, Broncos' wide receiver Wes Welker, LeBron James, and Tom Brady have all reportedly undergone hair transplants to help restore their hairlines. English footballer Wayne Rooney even documented his transplant experience for the media and his fans.

No doubt these athletes are drawn to new transplant techniques that require little downtime and discreet healing. The FDA-approved NeoGraft FUE device is used to extract individual hair follicles from the donor area at the back of the patient's scalp which are then implanted into the bald areas of the scalp. This method replaces the prior technique of cutting a large strip from the back of the patient's scalp and eliminates the use of sutures or staples. FUE procedures leave no linear scar and patients can return to moderate athletic activity in just days instead of weeks making it perfect for athletes.

Naomi Campbell's Hair Loss Woes

It has long been speculated that Naomi Campbell struggles with traction alopecia. New concerns were sparked this week after she was photographed at an event wearing a wig.

Over the years, Campbell has been photographed with bald spots, which appear to be the result of years of tight hairstyles, weaves, and extensions.

Well known for her long time use of hair extensions, the British supermodel appears to be dealing with the consequences of the pulling, styling and abuse her follicles have suffered over many years. Common amongst ethnicities who wear tight braids, those who use hair extensions over a long period of time, attach wigs or weaves with glue/clips/tape, or those who suffer from trichotillomania (hair-pulling disease), traction alopecia is a result of the chronic tension or pulling on the follicles causing irreparable damage.

The definitive cure is hair transplantation which permanently replaces the follicles into the bald skin. However, without a change in hair-care habits, the transplanted hair is also at risk.

Recession Alert: Chris Hemsworth

Thor actor Chris Hemsworth, 30, has risen to fame thanks to his popular super hero roles, but one fight his "golden hammer" isn't going to help him with is his receding hairline.

In photos from Sunday's Oscars, you can see deepening recession in the temporal region, which isn't uncommon for a man his age. Thirty percent of men in their 30s experience hair loss and the number increases to 40 percent as men enter their 40s. While Hemsworth's hairline is maturing, he is fortunate to have an otherwise full head of hair.

He might want to consider a proactive hair regimen of FDA-approved Propecia or Rogaine, which could help him avoid any further recession.

He would hardly be the first actor to take action against hair loss, more celebrities are investing in hair restoration than ever before. New technology and non-invasive procedures are selling points for many actors looking to enhance their looks discreetly.
